Interview: Deerhoof

Who’s going to be in the line-up when you guys are in NZ?
We have Satomi on vocals and bass, John and Ed on guitars, and Greg on drums and interviews.

This isn’t your first visit to the country – what keeps bringing you back?
Whaddya mean mate? NZ is no Epcot Center but don't sell yourself short. We love it there.

A lot of New Zealanders view of our own country is that we think tourists view us as having sheep everywhere and that they only know Lord of The Rings and Flight of The Conchords. Is there an image that you tend to associate with New Zealand?
Argh I did not care much for Lord of the Rings and I've never heard of Flight of the Conchords. Anyway Greggy has no time for TV and movies what with the constant international demand for his drumming and the neverending need for new songs.

Are there any bands or artists in the NZ music scene that you or the band take an interest in?
Coco Solid

After so many years with the band do you have a favourite album, or one that you enjoy playing more live?
I don't really sit around listening to my own records. I heard them too many times while I was making them. My favorite stuff to play live is from the new album. But all our live versions are pretty different from the record versions, were like a Deerhoof cover band. One of many actually. People keep coming up to me at shows saying they played an all-Deerhoof show or they were Deerhoof for Halloween.

Is there an album that stands out for you as the one you’re most proud of and/or least proud of?
Pick my favorite baby? I don't play that.

Do you think Deerhoof has a stereotypical fanbase? Get funny and describe them for us.
I refuse on ethical grounds to get funny. If you come to a Deerhoof concert you will realize right away that we don't have a stereotyped audience. Except that they are all a little goofy.

You seem to be one for collaborations, working outside of the Deerhoof side of things quite a bit. Are there any projects you’ve been working on solo or collaboratively lately? What can we expect from these?
I play guitar and sing in Les Bon Hommes. And I plays drums in a band with Sean Lennon on guitar and Martha Colburn on film projections. We are still thinking of a band name. We have a meeting at Sean's the day after I get back from Seoul where I am now. I'd ask your readers to send suggestions but by the time this article comes out it will be too late, we'll be stuck with something.

Some years ago you (and Satomi?) worked with Justin Theroux on Dedication. How did this come up? What was working on the soundtrack/score like, and had you done anything like that before? Is it something that you’d want to do again, and are there some directors that you’d like to work with specifically?
Deerhoof did a lot of the music for Dedication. Justin was a fan and approached us and we hit it off immediately. I really savored the challenge of marrying sound to image but I'm not sure I'd want to get that tangled up in that corporate spaghetti again. All those adversarial relationships and grumpy 9-to-5ers. I did a soundtrack to an animated film called DOLLS VS DICTATORS by Martha Colburn this year. That was great. There was no dialogue so it was just me coming out of the speakers.

Are there any people of note out there that you would really like to work with on any kind of front, whether that’s making music, making a film, creating an installation or some kind of other artistic endeavour?
I can do a really good Keith Richards imitation and a good Charlie Watts imitation so if the Rolling Stones are ever one engine down I am their man.

It’s worth noting that you’re a bit of a fan favourite when it comes to drumming. How often do drum nerds want to talk to you about drum nerd stuff?
There is no such thing as a drum nerd. If you play the drums you are automatically cool. Aren't I right, drummers?

A lot of popular bands of the moment cite Deerhoof as an influence. While I would imagine being a band for so long you all kind of draw inspiration from each other, are there some bands (or other creative exploits) out there that really hit home with you guys?
As I answer your questions "Honky Tonk Women" came on my speakers, now it's "Patricia" by Perez Prado. Before it was Debussy "Etude Pour Les Huit Doigts".
